The authors of “from home para casa”, Chris Kokubo and Nate Shepard, are, before anything else, my friends. And they will be yours too, just like anyone else that is lucky enough to cross paths with them on their panamerican odyssey certainly will be.
Chris and Nate radiate a strong, magnetic nature, attracting everyone that comes close, because they have two very simple and therefore powerful characteristics: they are interesting and are interested.
Interesting because they are both very different from one another. In truth, they are so authentic (almost eccentric), they are also very different from the majority of us – so that, without even trying, they know how to be that which no one expects.
Chris is a journalist that has also studied hospitality. Nate is American and a teacher of English and Spanish. She is Brazilian, with a Japanese last name, appearance, mannerisms and ancestors. He, a master of linguistics that built his own house using carpentry, masonry and sustainable principles. She is a daughter of the chaos and surliness that is one of the largest cities on earth, São Paulo. And who, for him, adopted the immensity and silence of the Vermont mountains, a green oasis in the northeastern United States, as her home.
They are also genuinely interested. In spite of having built a very complex and interesting universe, they continue organically expanding their frontiers. They go forward guided by an instinct that obliges them to pay attention, to see and hear – whether it’s in Portuguese, English, Japanese, French or Spanish. They are sincerely curious about people, plants, animals, places and causes. And, happily for us, they know how to transform all of this into good stories, deliciously shared with tea, beer, or a blog post, always worthy of a toast.
Autores de “from home para casa”, Chris Kokubo e Nate Shepard são, antes de tudo, meus amigos. E serão seus também, assim como certamente serão daqueles que tiverem a sorte de cruzar seus caminhos nessa odisseia pan-americana.
É que Chris e Nate são pessoas de natureza fortemente magnética, que atrai todos que se aproximam, por carregarem duas características muito simples, porém poderosas: eles são interessantes e são interessados.
Interessantes porque são muito diferentes entre si. Na verdade, de tão autênticos (quase excêntricos), também são muito diferentes da maioria de nós – desses que, sem esforço, sabem ser aquilo que não se espera.
Chris é jornalista e também estudou hotelaria. Nate é norte-americano e professor de espanhol e inglês. Ela, brasileira, de sobrenome, aparência, trejeitos e antepassados japoneses. Ele, máster em linguística que construiu a própria casa utilizando técnicas de alvenaria e princípios de sustentabilidade. Ela, filha do caos e da aridez de uma das maiores cidades do mundo, São Paulo. E que, por ele, adotou como casa a imensidão e o silêncio das montanhas de Vermont, um oásis verde no nordeste dos Estados Unidos.
São também genuinamente interessados. Apesar de terem construído um universo já tão complexo e peculiar, vão organicamente expandindo suas fronteiras. Avançam guiados por um instinto que os obriga a prestar atenção, ver e ouvir – seja em português, inglês, japonês, francês ou espanhol. Têm curiosidade sincera por pessoas, plantas, animais, lugares e causas. E, para nossa felicidade, sabem como poucos transformar tudo isso em boas histórias, saborosamente compartilhadas com um chá, uma cerveja, ou um post de blog, sempre dignos de um brinde.
